What actually happens

The free assessment, start to finish.

Here is exactly what happens, so you know what to expect before you get in touch.

Step 1

A short call back

We call you back, talk through how your child is getting on at school and what you would like help with, then arrange a time. Around ten minutes.

Step 2

An hour at the centre

Your child works through a friendly assessment, not a test, with one of our qualified teachers while you have a look around the centre. It is relaxed, and there is nothing to revise for.

Step 3

The honest picture

We talk you through what we found, the areas your child needs the most support with, and how we can help. There is no pressure to enrol.

What we can help your child with.

Whether your child is catching up, keeping up or aiming higher, the work is planned around what they need.

852a Osmaston Road, Allenton

Our tuition centre on Osmaston Road.

Your child comes in after school or on a Saturday and works with a qualified teacher who knows what they are working on, alongside other children in the centre, so they can see they are not the only one getting help. You are welcome to wait or to drop off, and your teacher gives you feedback after every lesson on how it went, which is something you do not get at school.

One of our qualified teachers will carry out the assessment and go through the results with you.

What Key Tuition parents say.

Our Derby centre opened in September 2025. These reviews are from families across Key Tuition, including our Brentwood centre, who rated us 4.8 from 122 Google reviews. Same teaching, same free assessment.

We cannot recommend Key Tuition enough. My son's tutor, Evelyn, is absolutely incredible.

Questions parents often ask.

Is it one to one?

Yes. Every child works one to one with a qualified teacher, on a plan built around what your child personally finds difficult, at their level.

There will be other children in the centre at the same time, each working on their own plan. Most children find that reassuring rather than off-putting, because they can see they are not the only one getting help. It is not the kind of tuition where everyone sits round a table working through the same thing.

What does it cost?

Lessons at the centre are £37. Online over Zoom is £42 per child, with never more than three children in a session. Paying monthly for centre lessons comes to £111, £148 or £185, depending on how many of your child's days fall in that month once school holidays are taken out, and paying by term is £481, which is thirteen lessons paid for and fourteen taught.

The assessment itself is free. If you claim Universal Credit you can get back up to 85% of what you pay, and Tax-Free Childcare adds £2 for every £8 you put in. We can also take childcare vouchers. At the assessment we will work out how often your child should come and what that actually costs you after any support you qualify for.

How many sessions do we have to commit to?

We usually say a term as a minimum, because that is long enough to see real progress rather than a short-term lift. After that it is up to you and how your child is getting on, and we review that with you as they go.

Plenty of families stay a good deal longer. We have children who have been coming to Key Tuition for thirteen years.

My child says they do not want extra lessons.

A lot of children feel that way before their first visit. The assessment is relaxed, there is nothing to revise for and nothing to fail, and most children settle once they see what it is like. If it turns out not to be for them, you have not paid anything.

What if my child has additional needs?

Our teachers are kind, patient and experienced in working with children with dyslexia, autism and anxiety, and they work at a pace that suits your child. Tell us on the call what helps and what does not, and we will set the assessment up around it.
